TROEF is staying home! For the first time, we’re open during the summer. With the exhibition ‘Our House’, we explore the concept of “space”: What is space? When are you allowed to claim it? And when does a place feel safe? Through art and events, we’ll unravel what makes a house a home.

Let us guide you through Our House: as soon as you enter, you step into the installation ‘The Hallway’ by huhh. (Louise & Alana Wieland). In a house, the hallway is the space where you spend the least time. Nevertheless it is the place for welcome and goodbye. This installation brings together stories, personal objects, and shared experiences.

“Test everything and hold on to what is good”

That is what my grandfather used to say, and I am reminded of it every time the world changes little by little. As we face the rapid shifts of modernity and stand on the precipice of change, we sometimes forget that we can choose what we take with us; in between past and future, there is agency, autonomy and the will to find and craft a path of our own.

huhh., the artistic collaboration with Louise Wieland, believes in the collective potential of personal experiences: to share, to learn, and to consolidate. Our work brings these lived stories into focus—along with their cultural and material histories. In my work, I approach the future through the lens of  craft and tactility, looking back at where we come from and making visible the lines that connect us into the future.

Whenever I have free time, I like to garden. The thrill of planting a seed, the frustration of keeping it alive, and the joy when it blooms. Art, for me, is like tending a garden: I choose a theme, I research, plan and execute. And just like in a garden, as I move through the process of growth, care, and exploration -with stories as both seed and flower- I come to realize one thing: it is not only an expression of me, but of an ecosystem as a whole.

Reflecting on heritage, ritual, and materiality, I listen for and tend to micro-stories that together form a greater narrative. Here “us vs. them” loses meaning; through shared spaces, experiences, and histories, we become “us and us.”

Through huhh. I create works that are rooted in a simple message: to spark curiosity, to uplift, and to share.

Our next stop is the kitchen. Here you can take a seat at Katayun Taraporevala’s table, and explore how food can create a sense of belonging. The tablecloths you see were created during Katayun’s project 'Queer Migrants Eating'. The final room of Our House is reserved for you. Take up space, reflect, experiment and make TROEF a little bit your home too.

The floor is yours!

KATAYUN TARAPOREVALA (2001) Queer Migrants Eating

I am Katayun Taraporevala, a drawer, mixed-media artist, and community facilitator. My work revolves around bringing people together to create, learn, and explore collectively. I am passionate about education and drawn to initiatives that merge art with learning and community. I also work collectively within SPIN and DAM DAM, exploring themes of publishing, alternative systems, and collective care.

Throughout Our House, we host a series of activities where we collectively explore more space. Join us for the neighbourhood party, the screening of Tuinhuis, the queer migrants dinner or one of the workshops. Check ‘upcoming events’ for the full agenda.
